The kurbits painted wooden horse from Dalarna has become a great symbol of Sweden. The Dalecarlian horse became a world wide celebrity when a big wooden horse was placed outside the Swedish pavillion during the World exhibit in New York 1939. Today the horse is still hand carved and hand painted. This is one of the most famous symbols of Sweden. They are still made according to old methods in Sweden. The story about the horse began long before in the deep forests of Sweden. It is believed that it was the forest workers in Dalecarlia who started doing toys for their children when they sat by the fire in the evening after work. Often they were a long way from home and missed their loved ones. Wood and knives were always with them and therefore it came natural to carve wood toys for the children. Horses were their companions who worked in the forests with the workers. These wood workers probably made the first Dalecarlian horses. In that times door-to-door salesmen embraced the horse among their products and people all around Sweden could buy one. It has been told that wooden horses were sold at markets already in 1624.
