In the tale of Hervarar you can read about the sword "Tirfing". Svaflami, the king of Gardarike, was the first owner of the magic sword Tirfing. One day he went on a wild animal hunt and met two dwarves beside a big rock. He cast a spell on them by brandishing his sword above their heads so that they could not disappear. The two dwarves whose names were Durin and Dvalin begged to be let loose and promised to make him a sword that could neither fall apart or corrode: that could cut iron and stone as easy as cloth and that would always bring victory to its owner. The name of the sword was Tirfing. The sword was the most important of the Vikings' weapons. Through its beauty and quality it would reflect its owner's position in society. The sword was first made during the Bronze age and was frequently used until the 16th century when it was replaced by the rapier. Silver was the most precious metal to the Vikings. Silver jewellery is often found in broken pieces, enabling us to draw the conclusion that the Vikings often traded using silver.
